Clean Water Notebooks

Through the late 1990s, SeaLand® Technology president Ed McKiernan developed a series of “notebooks” that covered important aspects of marine sanitation. They provide valuable information on the science of marine sanitation, and may even help you decide what type of marine sanitation system would be best suited to your location and boating purpose.

• Volume 1 – Ecological Impact of Boat Sewage Discharge

  Describes marine sewage and what can be done so that boaters and fisheries can share the benefits of cleaner boating waters.

• Volume 2 – U.S. and International Marine Sanitation Requirements

  Discusses the development and classifications of Marine Sanitation Devices (MSDs), and includes international standards related to these devices.

• Volume 3 – The Clean Vessel Act

  Through this act of Congress, states could apply for funding of pump-out stations and other waste disposal facilities for the boating public.

• Volume 4 – Disposal of Sewage from Pump-out Stations

  Recommendations for on-site and off-site marine sewage treatment systems are described, as well as septic systems.

Volume 5 – Issues and Answers Regarding Holding Tank Deodorants

Details the different types of holding tank deodorants, their effectiveness, and their impact on the marine environment.
